CANVAS is a relational art project by multidisciplinary artist, creative director, and Chicago Golden Gloves Champion Noelia Cruz that highlights and documents the boxers’ musicianship and artistry. A ring canvas is re-stretched as a site of painting, composition, and live performance. Developed in collaboration with Chicago Park District boxing gyms and world-class musicians, CANVAS merges sport artistry, music, and visual art to honor the craft, history, and community of Chicago boxing.

As a nod to boxing’s community, the work moves through the lens of relational art; embracing a process of co-creation between boxers, musicians, and the artist, where the canvas becomes a kinetic score, the boxer’s footwork becomes brushstroke, and each interaction becomes both process and performance. CANVAS is built through shared process, community, movement, rhythm, history, and the power of collaboration, discipline, and interconnectedness.
