CANVAS

A Kinetic Score

CANVAS is a multidisciplinary project that captures the rhythm of boxing. In collaboration with Chicago Park District fighters, the work invites boxers to shadowbox on acrylic-covered canvases, turning their movements into kinetic scores. These visual scores are then interpreted by live musicians, who improvise from the footwork strokes in a sparring session across forms. Directed and conceptualized by Noelia Cruz—violinist, Golden Gloves champion, and multidisciplinary artist. CANVAS enters the ring as a site of composition, to honor the musicality of boxing.

We’re honored to present a series of live performances across three Chicago parks in collaboration with the boxing gyms and coaches who have helped shape the CANVAS project.

Join us as we return to the very floors where these fighters train, to witness how their footwork becomes music, and their stories become form. These painted scores will be interpreted by renowned musicians Edward Wilkerson Jr., James Singleton, Zachary Good, Ethan Cowburn, and Roy Preyas.
